Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise as a little girl. Her aunt was an overnight nurse so that she could have the opportunity to study art theatre or literature. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay learnt by doing that art can be a powerful vehicle for activism. In the same way, her mother was socially aware and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and was raised. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summers and was later motivated to make a documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she earned qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. She began her career working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked look over the rubbish at the home of one of jury. Due to her duties she began to feel dissatisfied by journalistic work and entered the business of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist at an unassuming production studio straight out of school. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency.
